Each year, we lose some good outdoor art in Winnipeg. For the year indicated, here's a last look at, a last goodbye to some of the artwork that has disappeared that year.

This Mural was rendered by Mike Johnston in 2000 for the then client and tenant, Genesis Bookstore. It was replaced in September 2004 with a new Mural for a new tenant (see Murals section, same address).

Original notes on this wall:

Steve Wilson (Graffiti Art Programming): "This was another situation when a client didn't have a clear idea of what they wanted. So, the atmosphere and theme of the Genesis bookstore is one of surrealism and mysticism. We had a lot of reference material and books to look at. There were a number of sketches that were passed back and forth between us and the client. Mike came up with this concept of these little balls or spheres; they could be water or planets- floating into this harbour. With the sky leading up to nowhere, it kind of indicates these are people floating into earth and they're coming to inhabit this kind of a paradise; this little cove with the tropical plants. That was the idea of it; 'A New Beginning'. It was all done with spray paint."

The artist and the Gallery were only commissioned to do what is now the left half of the Mural, but the scene was extended by the artist to fill out the wall and to make a more complete scene and vision.
