Catherine Stenger Mass (May, 2010 via email): “Did you know that the piece is actually twofold? The 'Watershed' and the 'Interface' face each other. The photo on the website is of the 'Watershed', facing westward; the 'Interface' ~ a downscaled mirror image, or map you could say, composed of stainless steel and copper wire ~ faces eastward. It's subtle. One has to know what they're looking for. Vines have engaged in the gridwork, reminding me of ancient structures obscured beneath the canopy of forests, invisible. Unknown. It's been interesting to watch the way both of the pieces have changed in 17 years. The patina on the copper of the river is coming along. Slowly. One day it will be aqua mint green. I don't know when! When I installed the tiles in 1993, the river was polished, and shone, like a mirror. I am still drawn to materials and processes that take on a life of their own, and over time. I involve the element of time in my work to this day. Time, and metaphor.”
